An illegal fake ID is a genuine document which is being used by someone other than the original holder to which it was granted. It can also be a genuine document which has been altered (for example a real passport with a different name or date of birth added).

Finally, there are fake documents which are copies of genuine official documents. These are fake driving licences or fake passports, which are illegal to produce or possess. The vast majority of such fake documents are of poor quality and are unlikely to convince anyone.
